Performia Australia – 6 STEPS TO SANITY AS A MANAGER

6 STEPS TO SANITY FOR A MANAGER/ EXECUTIVE

One of the things that I notice when it comes to people that I talk to is that there are a lot of businesses that work with the Business Owner or Manager making the majority of the decisions.

In fact I was with one client yesterday who has a successful business that has been around for nearly fifty years and has about one hundred staff in two states.  A great result in anyone’s language.

I talked to a new Manager in the business and his take was the business is great but the biggest problem we have is a lack of systems and processes.

“We have one staff member who is trying to retire but he is the guy that everyone turns to whenever there is a problem as he knows everything.  If there is a computer problem on his day off or early in the morning he will get the call as he is the only one who knows how to fix it.”

If you’ve ever experienced a feeling of overwhelm and franticness in your business you might have a situation where everyone comes to you to solve all the problems of your business and doesn’t get on with handling their jobs they way they should.

You should look at the following points as some tips that will help you create a better business that grows faster and makes you more successful; but allows you to relax as well:

1)      Cope and Organize.

It is definitely important to handle the current business that you have and the demands of your staff and clients.  Spend some time though each day organizing your business so that it easier in the future.  This time is your investment in the future of your business.

2)      Work out the areas that need help first and handle them one at a time.

Look at what areas of your business take the most of your time and handle these first.  Each time you handle an area that takes the most work as a priority then you will get more of your time to grow and handle the business overall.

3)      Hire the right people in the first place.

Hire based on the person’s results in the past, reward based on production and results not opinion or how nice the person is.

4)      Train you staff.

Give them the skills they need to be able to the job.

5)      Get out of the way, but with caution.

The next step is to get out of the way of the person that you have hired and trained to do the job but let them get it done themselves.  When you do this though make sure that you don’t just get out of the way and let the business collapse.  A good manager knows that the first thing he needs to do when someone new comes into the area is to work with him making sure the area is getting the results it needs until the person is doing the job and then slowly get out of the way so that the person can take over and the results improve.

6)      Measure the business.

As an executive now keep measurements on each area of the business and how it is producing.  This way you can see problems and improvements easily and handle accordingly.

Constantly working on these six simple steps will help you grow your business and recover your sanity.

Performia Australia – How Can I Get More From My Team?

At Performia Australia we focus a lot on productivity and boosting the results of your business.

If you want to get more from your team the first thing you need to know is what motivates people.  We hear lots of answers to this question, money, friendship, achievement, satisfaction of a job well done etc.  The one that comes back more often than not though is acknowledgement from seniors and peers.

The power of a simple thank you from the person’s boss is the most undervalued reward staff can get.

Based on over sixty years of cumulative research our International CEO Marten Runow, created a graph – see below – which compares the value of different staff in terms of their ability to create value.  You should be able to see that there are some team members that simply get the job done and create a lot of value and don’t need much help.  At the other end of the scale, there are some team members that no matter how much time you spend with them seem to just have more and more problems.  It is pretty obvious who you would like to have more of in your business.

After looking at this graph – if you haven’t done so have a quick look now – have a think about where most of your attention as a manager goes.  My guess is that it probably gets mostly absorbed in the problems that are created in your business.  Therefore it’s not so hard to see why we end up forgetting to spend enough time with the people who are producing the results in the business.  As an extreme example, I spent some time with a super productive staff member of one of our clients recently that was leaving to work with a competitor.  When asked why, he simply told me that even though he was being offered more to stay than he was going for and he loved the company that he was leaving after eight years, he couldn’t remember once being thanked for his work.

People like attention.  In the Performia Australia “Build Your Team” seminar, this is something that we talk about at length and we do some drills to help you improve this in your business.  The reality is that people have a tendency to do what gets rewarded.  So, if the reward is attention, then you should be able to see that if you ignore the people that are producing and rewarding the people that are creating problems then the result will be – more problems.

The message is simple:

– Put as much attention as possible on the positive things someone does and validate that.

– Try and ignore the problems that are created and encourage your staff to come to you with solutions rather than problems.

– Take a look at what you are doing first, do you have the majority of your attention on the people who are getting a result for you or on the problems in your business.

After you’ve answered that question take a look at the business.  It shouldn’t be a surprise to realise that you are getting more of what you are putting your attention on.  If you have staff and you find them arguing or you have a lot of problems you can either focus on the problems or you can push production and results.  The irony is that pushing production and results actually solves the problems a lot quicker than focusing on the problems, so whenever you are having trouble with your team focus on results and rewarding them, rather than getting caught spending all or most of your attention on the problems themselves.

To find out the easiest way to create this change in your business come to the Performia Australia Build Your Team seminar.

Performia Australia – What Happened To The Socceroos?

The World Cup is coming to an end, and I can’t help but think that what happened to the Socceroos in South Africa is a good analogy for what often happens in our businesses and how we can avoid the same problems.

GERMANY 2006 V SOUTH AFRICA 2010

In 2006 we were drawn to play Brazil in our first game, then Japan and the Czech Republic.  In 2010, we were drawn to play Germany in the first game then Serbia and Ghana.  In terms of rankings and quality opposition we were probably worse off in 2006, but it was very similar.

Before we played Brazil in 2006, Socceroo coach Guus Hiddink made the comment that it was an exciting opportunity to be comparing ourselves to the best in the world and the players would go out as the outsiders but were going to give it our best shot and show Australia what they were capable of.  Captain Mark Viduka said that the players were excited and were going out to play and win the game.  The result was we lost but played well before defeating Japan and drawing against the Czech Republic and making the next round.

Before we played Germany in 2010, three players including captain Lucas Neill said that we would be very happy with a draw against Germany. Coach Pim Verbeek said that we were the outsiders and that Germany were a great team.  We then went out with a defensive game plan. It seemed we were trying to avoid losing by much.  The end result was we lost by a lot, 4-0 before another draw and win. The same as we did in Germany in 2006, but that one loss cost us a place in the next round.

WHAT ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?

In business, as in life, have you ever noticed that some business groups look confident and can take on the world, whilst others question themselves and their teammates and don’t get as much done?

It would not surprise you perhaps to know that this self confidence and motivation is in no small part to the self-belief of the team’s leader as well as the belief that leader has in the team.  Some people can lead a team, and the people in it do better simply because that person is there.

This may seem a bit daunting to you as a leader in your business to realize how much your behavior and what you do with your team will affect the results of your business.  It doesn’t need to be.  There are tools that you can learn to help you build your team and get them working together with confidence.  The best thing for you to do is book for one of the Performia Australia Build Your Team seminars right now.  Don’t wait and cost your business money by not knowing this information!

You can ask Pim Verbeek to come too if you’ve got his number!
